Customer Review: Cute stand
I like this stand. Was very easy to put together. Wish it held more books, but all in all my daughter and I love this product.
Customer Review: Great Bookcase!
This bookcase is great looking and easy to assemble- I am challenged in that department and my husband usually cringes when I tell him I put something together because I always end up with extra screws. Not the case with this- it only took 20 minutes and a screw driver and it came out great! My 18 month old daughter also loves it. It is a perfect height for her and she can pick out which book she wants because this lets her see the covers as opposed to a traditional bookcase that would only display the books' spines. The animals on the sides are very nicely painted. The only thing that held me back from giving it 5 stars was that it doesn't fit all of her books. It is also difficult to get thicker books into the canvas slots. Nevertheless, it is a great product and I would not hesitate to reccomend it!

Tuck Everlasting (Galaxy Children's Large Print Books)
Imagine coming upon a fountain of youth in a forest. To live forever--isn't that everyone's ideal? For the Tuck family, eternal life is a reality, but their reaction to their fate is surprising. Award winner Natalie Babbitt (Knee-Knock Rise, The Search for Delicious) outdoes herself in this sensitive, moving adventure in which 10-year-old Winnie Foster is kidnapped, finds herself helping a murderer out of jail, and is eventually offered the ultimate gift--but doesn't know whether to accept it. Babbitt asks profound questions about the meaning of life and death, and leaves the reader with a greater appreciation for the perfect cycle of nature. Intense and powerful, exciting and poignant, Tuck Everlasting will last forever--in the reader's imagination. An ALA Notable Book. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Customer Review: Tuck Everlasting is a classic
I've been reading this beautiful and sensitively written book for three decades now. It never loses its hold on me. The endearing characters, the vivid settings, the adventure, the entire momentum of the story are exquisite. The powerful question Babbitt addresses throughout -would you choose to live forever, if you could - provides great material for meaningful, profound discussion for people of all ages.
Customer Review: Joe's review
Hi, my name is Joe and I am in 6th grade. Tuck Everlasting is a book about a girl named Winnie and the secret that she finds out about. Winnie is a girl who lives in a house that is surrounded by a fence just outside of the wood. She decides that she wants to run away and have an adventure, because her parents will not let her go outside the fence. When she gets outside the fence she goes into the wood. While she is there, she see's a boy by the name of Jesse Tuck, drinking water from a spring. His family shows up and they kidnap Winnie. At first she is scared, but when they start to explain the secret of the spring and why they don't want anyone to know about it, she sees that they are a very nice family. Winnie learns the special power that the spring has and has to decide if she wants to drink from the spring or not.

These books are all fairy tales EDITED by Andrew Lang he has written none of them which is exactly what I had expected when I got it. If you get this because you want an Andrew Lang book, well that's just silly. It says on the front cover that he edited them.

MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN (PICADOR BOOKS)
Used Price: $0.99
Customer Review: challanging but worth it
This book took me a while to read. It is very wordy and a bit of a challenge, but if you are up for a challenge this book is definitely worth reading. The story is so different from anything I had ever read before, and it gives such a detailed depiction of India and her history.
Customer Review: Delightful read
After recently finishing Mistry's 'A Fine Balance' I planned to give myself a break from Indian lit for a while, but finding myself without a book on the other side of the country, the only books in the shop that called out to me were Indian - so I bought three! Midnight's children is regarded as a classic, and deservingly so. I cannot help but contrast it with 'A Fine Balance' which I so recently read. Both are brilliantly written, inspiring books that intricately intertwine with India's tumultuous history. Yet they are as different as night and day. Midnight's children, although similarly passing through some quite dark hours of history, does not have the deflating, depression quality that the other book has. If anything Rushdie's writing shows symptoms of the 'disease of optimism' that his characters and his country so often succumb to in the novel. Despite the flawed narrator Saleem's neverending series of mishaps and his sense of inevitable doom, I couldn't help but feeling upbeat throughout this novel. Part of what makes this book so interesting is that it combines history with fantasy. Not just in the usual sense of historical fiction, but in a more magical, mystical sense. I won't go into detail but this makes this book a delight to read. The first person narration is quirky, racing forwards and backwards and admittedly suffering from errors of memory and chronology but never too off-beat so as to get confusing (or rarely so). Yet another book I highly recommend. Look forward to reading more of Salman Rusdhie's work in the future.

Curious George Cake Topper Set
Curious George Party Cake Topper Set. This cake topper set includes George hanging from trees action figurine, 3 bunches of palm trees and logo sign pick. Makes a great toy after the cake is served.
Customer Review: Curious George cake topper
Received product as pictured. George actually swang! Bakeries were not able to place toppers on but was glad to make the same designs on the cake. I would be placing the toppers on the cake myself. Shipping of the product cost more than product, but was able to receive the product within 2 days. I wish there was one company that carried all of my "Curuios George" products to save on shipping cost. Thanks.

The Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age Ten
From the bestselling authors of The Baby Book and The Birth Book comes The Discipline Book, the definitive guide to raising happy, well-adjusted, well-behaved children. Seasoned parents of eight, Bill and Martha Sears draw on personal experience and their professional knowledge as childcare experts to provide an authoritative approach to a broad range of disciplinary issues and practices.

With focus on preventing behavior problems as well as managing them when they arise, the Searses offer clear, practical advice on everything parents need to know about disciplining young children. Believing that discipline starts at birth, the Searses discuss baby discipline, disciplining the toddler, mother-father roles in modern parenting, saying no, self-esteem as the foundation of good behavior, helping a child to express feelings, the constructive use of anger, good nutrition for good behavior, and sleep discipline.

On handling problem behavior, the Searses cover sibling rivalry, spanking and alternatives to spanking, breaking annoying habits, and eliminating bothersome behaviors like whining and talking back. The Searses strongly advocate teaching children values like apologizing and sharing, and explain how to deal with such issues as lying, stealing, and cheating. In addition, the Searses address building healthy sexuality and discipline in special situations such as after divorce and in the single-parent household.

Customer Review: Just what I was looking for
Still reading, but so far I really like it! Came highly recommended by friends.
Customer Review: Good AP book
This book was just a little disappointing in that it didn't have alot of concrete advice, just kind of general ideas that I already had in mind for parenting. I still would recommend it though because I really like Dr. Sears and think that what is in the book is pretty good, it just wasn't exactly what I was looking for. If you are new to the idea of AP parenting then this is a good one for you, or just struggling with what to do, it might be a good reminder.

Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads
Take your average guide for new mothers, chuck most of the stuff about breast feeding and ditch the deep background research and stats, then generously pepper with illustrations and burley humor and what do you have? Your average guide for new fathers. Be Prepared follows that template pretty closely, and that's really quite an acceptable thing. Yes, there's a bit too much emphasis here on broadly drawn manly stuff like changing a diaper at a ballgame, but there's also heaps of useful advice that's cleverly and efficiently presented for pops who, despite their best intentions, really aren't prepared to dig into encyclopedia-sized tomes. The basics (childproofing, bathing, feeding, entertaining) intermix with nifty sidebars (homemade bath toys, foods to never give your baby, exercises for dads) in easy-to-peruse chapters organized according to the age of the offspring up to age 1. There are more thorough how-to guides for new dads, but for most men moving into fatherhood, Be Prepared will fill the bill. --Steven Stolder

Customer Review: This is the book for you if this is your first baby!
Be Prepared reminds me of the Boy Scout Handbook only with humor as an added bonus! (Probably by design). This book is the perfect nuts and bolts manual for early childhood rearing packed with answers to the questions you are almost certainly already asking yourself. Great practical advice and light of heart to keep first fathers from freaking out. It gives you the real scoop on the major things you should know and keeps you in perspective. I highly recommend this book if this is your first baby, as it is mine. One caveat though, it is a from-the-day-of-birth manual and does not cover the pregnancy term. If you are looking for advice during the pregnancy, you will have to look elsewhere.
Customer Review: Expecting Dad
Great book, geared more toward after the little guy or girl is born, but some good stuff for "dad prep" leading up to the arrival also. Really good information and ideas for after the baby is born and definitely written for guys, I'd recommend it.

Following the futuristic storylines of "1984" and "Brave New World" comes "Among the Hidden". Luke is a third child in a family with already two boys. Customer Review: Could be more - Luckily it's a series!
This author always has an interesting view on things. Her book "running out of time" was a great story which I read back in grade school. When the suspense/horror film "the Village" came out I wondered if she got any credit for coming up with the idea first. In this, "Among the Hidden," I felt like the outline of the book was good, but the story itself felt unfinished. The idea of a government creating a law against more than two children is real - in the example of China and the one child law. I wanted to see what this author could do with an idea that isn't science fiction any more. Luke, a "shadow child" - an illegal third child, is a strange character because we just have to take for granted that he could live for twelve years completely hidden from everyone else outside his family. He lives completely separated from the rest of the world and when houses begin being built close to his home he spends almost a year without ever leaving his home or his attic room. That in itself is hard to believe. Throw in the strange hierarchy of rich "Barons" and poor farmers; the world seems too unbalanced to have lasted so long. After finishing it, I felt that "Among the Hidden" needed more flesh to make the story believable. The whole book felt like it was just the beginning of a good idea. Luckily, it is just the first in a series of books about these so-called Shadow Children. I have not yet read any others, but I hope they do make the world more believable. Read this if you are a fan of this author or a fan of YA dystopias.

The Last Child (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)

John Hart’s New York Times bestselling debut, The King of Lies, announced the arrival of a major talent. With Down River, he surpassed his earlier success, transcending the barrier between thriller and literature and winning the 2008 Edgar Award for best novel. Now, with The Last Child, he achieves his most significant work to date, an intricate, powerful story of loss, hope, and courage in the face of evil.

Thirteen year-old Johnny Merrimon had the perfect life: a warm home and loving parents; a twin sister, Alyssa, with whom he shared an irreplaceable bond. He knew nothing of loss, until the day Alyssa vanished from the side of a lonely street. Now, a year later, Johnny finds himself isolated and alone, failed by the people he’d been taught since birth to trust. No one else believes that Alyssa is still alive, but Johnny is certain that she is---confident in a way that he can never fully explain.

Determined to find his sister, Johnny risks everything to explore the dark side of his hometown. It is a desperate, terrifying search, but Johnny is not as alone as he might think. Detective Clyde Hunt has never stopped looking for Alyssa either, and he has a soft spot for Johnny. He watches over the boy and tries to keep him safe, but when Johnny uncovers a dangerous lead and vows to follow it, Hunt has no choice but to intervene.

Then a second child goes missing . . .

Undeterred by Hunt’s threats or his mother’s pleas, Johnny enlists the help of his last friend, and together they plunge into the wild, to a forgotten place with a history of violence that goes back more than a hundred years. There, they meet a giant of a man, an escaped convict on his own tragic quest. What they learn from him will shatter every notion Johnny had about the fate of his sister; it will lead them to another far place, to a truth that will test both boys to the limit.

Traveling the wilderness between innocence and hard wisdom, between hopelessness and faith, The Last Child leaves all categories behind and establishes John Hart as a writer of unique power.

Customer Review: Brilliant..Powerful Story
There are books and authors (very glad for them) and there are BOOKS and AUTHORS..The Last Child and John Hart are in the latter. Mr. Hart is an incredible writer and keeps improving; breathing life and layers of complexities of life due to experiences we sometimes have to endure and come through; hopefully becoming more enlighten, especially growing up as children....Why I say that as a reader is because when I am moved emotionally by an author, there has been some tranformation in my psyche. I only review when I am moved by a story. This story is a stunner with true to life insights even though it is fiction. That's how masterful Mr. Hart is.. Thank You Very, Very Much Sir!!! No matter what I will NEVER, EVER GIVE UP!!
Customer Review: 4 1/2 Stars -- Transcends The Barrier Between Thrillers And Literature!
The Last Child is the story of thirteen year-old Johnny Merrimon's quest to find his twin sister, Alyssa, who disappeared one year ago and is presumed dead. But Johnny refuses to believe it. The mission Johnny goes on to uncover the truth results in a slow-building, but always intense, thrill ride that made me unable to turn the pages fast enough. Beyond the strong plot, The Last Child will introduce you to some well-developed characters that will stay in your head and heart for a while to come. John Hart, in his third novel, has written a story that is as heartrending as it is redemptive. To quote Jeffery Deaver "You'll feel this story as much in your heart as in your gut." If you're a thriller lover who wants the books they read to be written with a literary touch, then I think you'll highly enjoy The Last Child.

Slaughterhouse-five, or, The children's crusade: A duty-dance with death (A Dell book)
Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic Slaughterhouse-Five introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes unstuck in time after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.

Don't let the ease of reading fool you--Vonnegut's isn't a conventional, or simple, novel. He writes, "There are almost no characters in this story, and almost no dramatic confrontations, because most of the people in it are so sick, and so much the listless playthings of enormous forces. One of the main effects of war, after all, is that people are discouraged from being characters..." Slaughterhouse-Five (taken from the name of the building where the POWs were held) is not only Vonnegut's most powerful book, it is as important as any written since 1945. Like Catch- 22, it fashions the author's experiences in the Second World War into an eloquent and deeply funny plea against butchery in the service of authority. Slaughterhouse-Five boasts the same imagination, humanity, and gleeful appreciation of the absurd found in Vonnegut's other works, but the book's basis in rock-hard, tragic fact gives it a unique poignancy--and humor.
Used Price: $11.99
Customer Review: Vonnegut's Proposal
This novel is rendered so finely that, if you do not realize it, you will think of it as trash. Vonnegut uses high and low culture with such ease while blending deep philosophical questions. It's hard not to want to weep during this novel. But, Vonnegut does not want you to weep. He knows that you want to weep, like he does, and, so, brings an even more depressing moment that is so absurd that you can only laugh. It is Life manifest. American letters will not be the same without Kurt Vonnegut.
Customer Review: Refreshingly weird...
Adding my drop in the bucket of reviews: I enjoyed the book. It is insane at times, a little hard to follow, and leaves certain questions unanswered. But to me, these were all a part of the fun. It has an anti-war sentiment to it that doesn't leave the bitter taste of being preached at in your mouth. It mixes the grimmest of realities with outright science fiction in a way that makes it nearly believable. The book follows the life of Billy Pilgrim, a tall, odd, mentally unstable un-hero, as he jumps from one part of his life to the next. He spends time in a mental hospital, on his honeymoon, on another planet, drowning in a pool, but mostly, he spends it in Germany in WWII. As a chaplain's assistant, he is taken prisoner by the Germans and witnesses the bombing of Dresden. Billy is not brave. He is not strong. He is not particularly compassionate or kind. In some parts of the book, I outright hated him for his apathy. In others, I pitied him for his insanity. Overall, his story is just a narrative with no real emotion involved... But, I suppose, that was the intention. The story made me think. Made me consider everything from old wars to new ones, to time travel*, to family relations... And that is the most important thing to me in a book. I docked it one star because (though there's a reason for it) all of the violence and death made me uncomfortable. So it goes. *I might add that I like nearly every story involving time travel of some sort or another, and this makes me a little bit biased. It's the nerd in me coming out.

The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child (Sears Parenting Library)
With the recent spate of publicity surrounding the possible health risks posed by childhood immunization, parents are no longer simply following doctor's orders and automatically having their children vaccinated. Instead, they are asking questions. The problem is the search for answers only leads parents to conflicting, one-sided information: doctors claim that parents are endangering their child's life if they refuse shots, while radical vaccine opponents claim parents are endangering their child's life if they accept shots. With THE VACCINE BOOK, parents finally have one, fair, impartial, fact-based resource they can turn to for answers. Each chapter will be devoted to a disease/vaccine pair and offer a comprehensive discussion of what the disease is, how common or rare it is, how serious or harmless it is, the ingredients of the vaccine, and any possible side effects from the vaccine. Ultimately, parents will have to make their own informed decisions as Dr. Bob Sears is neither pro-vaccine nor anti-vaccine. But THE VACCINE BOOK will provide exactly the information parents want and need as they make their way through the vaccination maze.

Little Prince (Lythway Children's Large Print Books)
Used Price: $172.28
Customer Review: A terrible children's book
The Little Prince, regardless of how much it is loved, is a terrible book for children. It teaches that adults like numbers not because they explain something beautiful about the world, but because they count things; that specialization and the drive to understand, as represented by the Geographer, are unworthy pursuits; and that technological innovation is worthless. Rather than eat a water pill, the little prince would like to go out in search of a fountain; perhaps rather than making use of a toilet, he would prefer to wander off into a beautiful forest with a small shovel. Adults who wish to travel to another place do so not because they wish to explore their world, but because they are unhappy where they are. The message, of course, is to be happy with where you are; be happy with what you already know; and do not bother to explore or to learn, for these things are fool's errands. I cannot think of a worse message for an inquisitive child than the one contained in this book.
Customer Review: A Miracle! For all Ages! ThisHOWARDTranslationIsCorrect,Too!
Wow! At 50 years old, I read it for the first time, and every page "blew my mind" with wisdom. And, it made me swell up with tears as well! Stay away from the original famous translation by a woman. (Sorry, I can't remember her name.) This "Howard Translation" is quite close to the French. The original translation had many obvious, and crucial to the book, mis-translations. "The Little Prince" insipired me to read "Wind, Sand and Stars", and it is amazing how many things are either conceptually, or even litterally, parallel in both books! This "de Saint-Exupery" is an incredible writer! And, he brings existential truths about life out of theory and into reality! Don't miss them! But, start with "The Little Prince" as it is a Miracle!

Caring for Your Baby and Young Child (Child Care Books from the American Academy of Pediatrics)
It's Sunday after dark. Your baby is sick, hurt, or acting strangely, and the doctor won't be in until tomorrow. How can you find out what to do when your healthcare professionals are unreachable? You may only need to go as far as your bookshelf. The revised edition of Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 (the American Academy of Pediatrics' reference book for infancy through preschool), provides a wealth of authoritative child-care information in an easy-to-use format.

The first half of this hefty text serves as a comprehensive parenting manual, and includes a month-by-month guide to the first year, nutritional information, basic care instructions, and physical, emotional, and social developmental milestones for children up to 5 years old. While the American Academy of Pediatrics represents the mainstream child-rearing philosophies embraced by thousands of baby doctors, it does not reflect the entire gamut of child-rearing theory. (There's no discussion, for instance, of breast-feeding past the first year or co-sleeping.) The second half of the book includes a thorough, easy-to-navigate emergency first-aid section, plus detailed information about childhood illnesses, immunization schedules and side effects, and family structures, as well as a discussion of behavioral issues. Caring for Your Baby and Young Child is useful, sensible, and carefully researched, and makes a trustworthy addition to any parent's bookshelf. --Ericka Lutz
